Purchase of 8 ¼ acres by Nelson T. Branch and James P. Curtis from Silas W. Shelburn

This deed made this 28th day of Nov. in the year Eighteen hundred
and fifty one between Silas W. Shelburn and Rebecca his wife of the county of
Pulaski and state of Virginia of the first part and Nelson T. Branch and James
P. Curtis of the county and state aforesaid of the second part witnesseth that
in consideration of the sum of four hundred dollars to be paid on or before the
first day of April Eighteen hundred and fifty three to the said Silas W.
Shelburn and Rebecca his wife by the said Nelson T. Branch and James P. Curtis
(for which payment the property hereby intended to be conveyed is held bound).
The said Silas W. Shelburn and Rebecca his wife do grant unto the said
Nelson T. Branch and James P Curtis one certain tract or parcel of land lying in
the county of Pulaski on the waters of the Fall Branch adjoining the lands of
the said Shelburn and containing by recent Survey eight and ¼ acres 21 poles
including a sawmill and the dwelling house near it and bounded as follows: Beginning at an Ironwood Bush on the South side of the Fall
Branch at the upper end of the pond thence north 23 East 9 poles crossing said
pond to a Hickory Sapling, thence north 5 west 20 poles up the hill with a fence
to a Black Oak bush in the fence corner thence with another fence North 891/2
W41 poles to a black oak and white oak sapling on Newby’s line, thence south
45 E 16 ½ poles to black stumps and dogwood thence South 45 W 15 poles crossing
the creek to a white [oak?]; thence S45 E35 to a large White Oak near a fence;
thence N45 East 15 poles a direct line to the Beginning.
The said Silas W. Shelburn and Rebecca his wife do hereby convey unto the
said Nelson T. Branch and James P. Curtis the right and title to the aforesaid
tract of land and its appurtenances with general warrantee as witness their
hands and seals this day and date above mentioned.

We A Snow and G Cecil, Justices of the peace for the county aforesaid do certify that Silas W. Shelburn and Rebecca Shelburn his wife whose names are signed to the writing above personally appeared before us in our county aforesaid and acknowledged the same.
And the said Rebecca Shelburn being by us examined privily and apart from her
husband and having the writing aforesaid fully explained to her she the said
Rebecca Shelburn acknowledged the said writing to be her act and declared that
she had willingly executed the same and does not wish to retract it.
Given under our hands and seals this 29th day of November.

[Note, it is not clear who James Curtis was. Oddly, the name Curtis appears again in the 1880 Census of Washington County when there are two granddaughters Magnolia B. Curtis, age 8 and Minne E. Curtis, age 5 listed at Nelson Branch household. No indication of who they belonged to but could be his oldest daughter Dolly that we have no account of. And these granddaughters were both born in Tennessee with both parents from Virginia.]
