1907 |
Iona
Hope, probably around 1907. She had had an unfortunate early marriage
which did not last, but resulted in the birth of her little son, Herbert
Camille Phelps. Iona worked first for the Jaeger family, and later the Longmire
family in Monroe City. She earned $3.50 a week. She said she would keep
perhaps a dollar for herself, and send the rest to Grandmother Ida, who
cared for little Herbert. Photo and commentary courtesy Jackie Gander Deets. |

February 23, 1909 | Harvey
Smithton and Iona Hope-their wedding picture. Dad, in a new suit,
wearing his "Odd Fellow lodge" button, a celluloid collar and a
red knit tie! Mother's white "waist" was a lovely thing with
delicate shadow appliqu and a tiny bit of blue edging around the
collar. The suit was navy blue serge. This was not their best
wedding picture, but the only one I could locate. They were married
on Feb. 23, 1909 at the Methodist church in Monroe City. When "Harve"
went to engage the minister, the minister asked him who the bride to be
was. When "Harve" said "Iona Phelps", the
minister said "why, that's the nicest and the prettiest girl in all
Monroe!". They went immediately on the train to Shelby county
where dad had rented "Aunt Mandy's" little farm. Photo and commentary courtesy Jackie Gander Deets. |
|
Around 1930 |
Tandy
Gentry, a special friend of "Harve's". They had worked
together on farms in Shelby County. After Harve and Iona were
married and living on the Perry place, he spent a part of a winter with
us. After we moved, he sent Harve this picture of himself in his
elegant new car. Four years passed-the friends lost touch. In
the late 1930's Tandy came to visit. What a reunion! Photo and commentary courtesy Jackie Gander Deets. |

1915 | Pea
Ridge school, probably spring 1915. Hazel Paugh took the picture. I
am just behind the dark haired boy with his hand over his face. Next
to me is Zora Paugh, the teacher's little sister. Elmer Nall is in
front of her. Herb is in the back, almost hidden. Percy Powell
is to the right of Zora, in the dark clothing. Perhaps some of the big
girls in the back are Hathaways. A rural school teacher had her
hands full teaching 8 grades in a one-room country school - especially
with a shortage of books! A good friend of mine, who at age 16,
started teaching in a rural school in North Dakota had no text
books. She taught from the Sears Roebuck Catalog! Photo and commentary courtesy Jackie Gander Deets. |
|
1917 | Harvey
Joe, he of the snappy black eyes and hair and blue-eyed, blonde Clifford
Robert, with their "big sis", probably taken in the spring of
1917, as my long braids had been cut. I remember the blue plaid
dress! Photo and commentary courtesy Jackie Gander Deets. |

1930's | We
grew up, scattered, started our families, but "Happy Hollow"
still was central to our lives! Wonderful big family gatherings at
Holiday Time. Our annual Easter picnics up the Gordon Hollow were a
special event. Neighbors and their families often joined us. Photo and commentary courtesy Jackie Gander Deets. |

1930's | As the years flowed by, there were grandchildren

|
1931 | Iona
Hope Gander. This photography by Belle Johnson in Monroe City was
taken in 1931. She had just won the Missouri Master Farmer for her
most successful poultry project, and had to have her photograph taken for
publicity purposes. I look at this photograph and see all the inner
beauty of her soul. It was my wish that I might someday become the
"great lady" that our Mother was. I never made it! Photo and commentary courtesy Jackie Gander Deets. |
|
March, 1936 |
Our
family photo by Belle Johnson. Dad wanted a family group photo
made. It was March, 1936. The children, Charles, Robin and
Carol and I had come "home" to escape the bitter winter of 1936
in South Dakota. So here we are, Harvey, on the right, sitting
slightly crooked. A tractor had turned over-cutting off a part of
one toe. Next to him, our dad, Harve who had been ill, and showed
it. Our Mother Iona, being her sweet self, Bruce Eldon, being
natural. In the back row, Clifford, (behind Harvey) had the
giggles. Next Jackie who had a case of the hiccoughs - imagine
trying to pose for a photo when you're going "hic, hic, hic",
next Edith who was also giggly - and then Herb looking stern! It had
become so seldom that we were all together at one time, we who always had
been so close. Photo and commentary courtesy Jackie Gander Deets. |

1954 | "The
Deer slayer" Deer once were extinct in northeast
Missouri. When deer were reintroduced and deer hunting became legal,
Harve never missed a hunting season, and he almost always brought home his
trophy! In fact, he took his final trophy about six weeks before he
died on Jan 4, 1968 at age 87. Photo and commentary courtesy Jackie Gander Deets. |
